Methamphetamine — commonly known as meth or crystal meth — is a powerful stimulant that affects the central nervous system by causing a massive release of dopamine, producing an intense but short-lived rush of euphoria. With repeated use, the brain’s ability to produce and respond to dopamine is severely damaged — meaning the person loses the ability to experience pleasure from normal activities and becomes increasingly dependent on meth to feel anything at all. This is the neurological foundation of meth addiction.

Approximately 2.5 million Americans struggle with methamphetamine addiction, and meth claimed over 34,000 lives in 2021 alone according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. BIG SKY Treatment provides behavioral addiction treatment therapy for methamphetamine use disorder for both adults and adolescents, in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states.

Montana has been among the hardest-hit states in the country for methamphetamine — consistently ranking at or near the top nationally for meth-related arrests, drug seizures, and treatment admissions per capita. Meth is deeply embedded in Montana’s rural communities, where geographic isolation, limited economic opportunity, and distance from treatment services have allowed the crisis to develop largely out of public view.

The meth supply in Montana has also shifted significantly — the domestic production of meth has largely been replaced by highly potent, inexpensive meth produced by drug cartels and trafficked across the southern border, dramatically increasing both availability and potency. The meth available in Montana today is significantly more powerful than what was available a decade ago, which has accelerated the development of dependence and increased the severity of addiction.

BIG SKY Treatment is specifically positioned to serve Montana residents navigating this crisis, with outpatient and Virtual IOP programs designed to make treatment accessible across the state.

Methamphetamine addiction affects people across physical, psychological, and social domains — and because meth produces dramatic changes in appearance and behavior, the signs are often visible to family members before the person using acknowledges a problem.

Physical signs include dramatically increased energy and decreased need for sleep, significant weight loss and appetite suppression, skin sores from compulsive picking, tremors and sweating, and deteriorating dental health — a condition known as “meth mouth” caused by dry mouth, teeth grinding, and poor hygiene during use.

Psychological signs include anxiety and paranoia that can progress to full meth-induced psychosis, severe mood swings, depression and suicidal thoughts — particularly during the crash phase — hallucinations, delusions, and intense, overwhelming cravings.

Social signs include withdrawal from family and friends, neglect of work and responsibilities, financial difficulties, secretive behavior, strained relationships, and legal problems.

Meth psychosis is a state of acute psychosis — including hallucinations, delusions, and severe paranoia — that can be triggered by methamphetamine use, particularly with heavy or prolonged use or during sleep deprivation. It can occur during active use or in the days and weeks following cessation of use. Meth psychosis can be indistinguishable from schizophrenia in its acute presentation and can be terrifying for both the person experiencing it and those around them.

The good news is that meth psychosis is typically not permanent. For most people, psychotic symptoms resolve within days to weeks after stopping meth use, though recovery timeline varies based on the duration and severity of use. In some cases, particularly with very long-term or heavy use, some cognitive and psychiatric symptoms can persist for months. Early cessation and structured behavioral treatment significantly improve the prognosis.

If someone is experiencing active psychosis, hallucinations, or severe paranoia related to meth use, seek immediate medical attention rather than outpatient treatment as the first step.

Methamphetamine causes measurable structural damage to the brain — particularly to dopamine and serotonin systems — that affects cognitive function, emotional regulation, decision-making, and the ability to experience pleasure. Brain imaging studies have shown that heavy meth use damages the prefrontal cortex and dopamine pathways in ways that can impair memory, attention, and impulse control.

The more encouraging clinical reality is that the brain demonstrates significant capacity for recovery with sustained abstinence. Research shows that many of the cognitive deficits associated with meth use improve meaningfully over months to years of abstinence — though recovery is not uniform and some effects may persist longer than others. The brain’s neuroplasticity — its ability to adapt and repair — is real, but it requires time, sustained sobriety, and the kind of structured behavioral support that treatment provides.

This is one of the most important reasons to seek treatment rather than attempting to stop alone — structured behavioral therapy during the recovery period supports and accelerates the brain’s natural healing process.

The meth crash is the period immediately following heavy meth use when the drug wears off and the brain’s severely depleted dopamine system produces an intense rebound of fatigue, depression, anxiety, and overwhelming cravings. Unlike alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, meth withdrawal is not typically medically life-threatening — but it is intensely uncomfortable and is one of the primary drivers of relapse.

The crash phase typically involves extreme fatigue and the need to sleep for extended periods, depression that can include suicidal thoughts, intense cravings, increased appetite, and profound emotional flatness — the anhedonia that results from the brain’s damaged reward system. This phase can last from days to weeks depending on the duration and severity of use.

BIG SKY Treatment does not provide medical detoxification services. If you or a loved one is experiencing active psychosis or severe psychiatric symptoms during meth withdrawal, seek immediate medical attention. Once stable, BIG SKY Treatment provides the structured behavioral programming that supports long-term recovery.

No — and this is not a limitation of BIG SKY Treatment specifically. Currently, there is no FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for methamphetamine use disorder. Unlike opioid addiction, where Suboxone, methadone, and Vivitrol are clinically established options, meth addiction does not yet have an equivalent pharmacological treatment.

This makes behavioral therapy the primary and most effective evidence-based approach for meth use disorder. Evidence-based therapies including CBT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing have strong clinical track records for stimulant addiction and directly address the psychological compulsion, emotional dysregulation, and environmental triggers that drive meth use.

BIG SKY Treatment’s meth program is built around evidence-based behavioral therapies with demonstrated effectiveness for stimulant addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — particularly the Matrix Model, which was specifically developed for stimulant addiction — identifies and restructures the thought patterns, triggers, and high-risk situations that drive meth use. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) builds emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills that reduce the emotional pull of the meth crash and cravings cycle. Motivational Interviewing (MI) strengthens the person’s own readiness and commitment to change. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) addresses underlying trauma that frequently co-occurs with meth addiction.

Treatment is delivered through individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy within a trauma-informed clinical framework. For clients at our Kalispell location, Experiential Therapy — including equine therapy, wilderness therapy, art therapy, and music therapy — is integrated directly into the program, providing hands-on healing that reaches dimensions of recovery that talk therapy alone cannot always access.

Methamphetamine and mental health have an especially complex relationship. Meth directly induces anxiety, paranoia, and in severe cases psychosis during use — and depression, emotional flatness, and anhedonia during the crash and withdrawal phases. For people with pre-existing mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, or trauma, meth use dramatically worsens those conditions over time.

The meth-induced damage to dopamine systems means that people in early recovery often experience a prolonged period of depression and inability to feel pleasure — a state that is itself a powerful driver of relapse. Understanding and treating this post-acute withdrawal syndrome as a clinical condition rather than a personal failure is a critical component of effective meth treatment.

At BIG SKY Treatment, co-occurring mental health conditions are treated concurrently with meth use disorder within the same integrated dual diagnosis program — because lasting recovery from meth requires addressing the full neurological and psychological picture.

Yes. BIG SKY Treatment’s Adolescent Outpatient Program addresses methamphetamine use disorder in teens as well as adults. Adolescent meth use is a growing concern in Montana and carries distinct developmental risks — the adolescent brain is still forming and is particularly vulnerable to the neurological damage meth causes to dopamine and serotonin systems. Early intervention is especially critical with meth because the neurological damage accumulates with continued use.

Our adolescent program uses age-appropriate therapeutic approaches with structured family involvement throughout. Treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across our full service area. Call (406) 309-7500 or submit our verification form to confirm coverage and availability for adolescent meth treatment.

es. Most major insurance plans cover outpatient methamphetamine use disorder treatment, and BIG SKY Treatment works with a broad range of carriers including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource, Allegiance by Cigna, Montana Medicaid, TRICARE, and TriWest. BIG SKY Treatment is an in-network provider with PacificSource Health Plans. Federal mental health parity laws require most plans to cover substance use disorder treatment at the same level as other medical care.

Submit our confidential online verification form or call (406) 309-7500 – our admissions team will contact your insurance provider directly and confirm your benefits within one hour. There is no obligation to begin treatment after verification.

The first step is a conversation — and we are here whenever you are ready. Call (406) 309-7500 any time, day or night, or reach out through our website. We verify your insurance before your first session so there are no financial surprises.
